Am I Crazy for Not Wanting a $200,000 950hp Mustang?
Am I Crazy for Not Wanting a $200,000 950hp Mustang?
Would you pay $200,000 (€150,000 at current exchange rates) for a 950hp Mustang? Pay a little more, and it could have 1,100hp but not street legal. Does it make me less of a car enthusiast for not wanting anything to do with this car.

Shelby American announced today plans to build the Shelby 1000. It is based on the Mustang GT500, but Shelby replaces the stock engine's rods, crank and pistons to accept the power. It then turns up the boost from the supercharger to make the extra power.

Thankfully, Shelby doesn't mod the engine with double the factory power and walk away. It also has an updated suspension and brakes.

Still, this car does absolutely nothing for me. I respect the Mustang for being one of America's blue-collar icons. If you are not picky, used examples can be had for just a couple hundred dollars, and the aftermarket for these is among the most robust for any car in the world. You can turn a Mustang into a fun street car, drag racing car or track car easily. They are less a car than a platform for modification.

I feel like this Shelby takes things too far. A $200,000 Mustang will certainly be fast, but that is about it. I feel like the law of decreasing returns is at place here. A $10,000 Mustang that you build in your garage is more fun than a $50,000 GT5000, which in turn is significantly more fun than a $200,000 car you paid to have built.

So tell me, am I crazy for hearing about this and giving it a big yawn?

I don't blame you. All that power is just unusable for regular use. I mean, it's just crazy and it's not because I don't like Mustangs because I wouldn't want a 1100 hp vette.
