Oldsmobile started out as Olds Motor Works in 1897 by the hand of Ransom Olds. The company was the first to mass-produce an automobile, the Curved Dash, consequently becoming the biggest carmaker in USA, in the beginning of the 20th century. The cars were formally known as Olds automobiles, but were colloquially called Oldsmobile, and the name stuck. In 1908, General Motors bought Olds. Almost a century later, GM decided to phase out the 107 year old company, due to poor sales. Ironically, the last model of the Oldsmobile, the Bravada SUV, which was released after the GM’s announcement, was a very successful.
